The Difference a Few Days Make…

As you might have read on our Laos spending review, we had one of our rougher stretches as we traveled through the northern part of Laos on the Mekong River “slow boat cruise”.  There were some incredible sites, but the lodging wasn’t quite up to the same standards as the rest of SE Asia!!  In fact, we had our cheapest stay of the trip in Huay Xai before crossing the border into Thailand at a small guest house.

Here’s a similar slow boat to the one we rode on for a total of 19 hours over two days!

Life on the Mekong River

Here’s our $10 room, which we actually felt like we overpaid for after we spent some time in it!  It wouldn’t have been so bad if not for the dirty sheets and pillows, ants everywhere, nasty bathroom, or the smell of something dead in the corner of the room.

Here was our $10 room in Huay Xai.. it was probably only worth $5!

As if the room wasn’t bad enough, our bath towels were Hello Kitty… very nice!

A little over a week later, we lived the high life in Chiang Mai as we stayed at the Le Meridien Chiang Mai on hotel points, and we got upgraded to the Executive Suite!  Needless to say, we highly enjoyed our five nights there, but the bad part is we were reluctant to even leave the room!

A few option in the shower

A great view from the tub over Chiang Mai!

  1. Wow Dan thankfully you survived your stay at the equivalent to the Bates Motel. The only positive thing is the Hello Kitty towels. Love me some pink. Your next stay seemed much more friendly and enjoyable. 🙂

  2. Big change with this one. Although, the horrible hotel will give you great travel horror stories for a long time.
